Acceptable Material & Collection Guidelines

Waste Guidelines

Republic accepts standard waste as part of their curbside collection. There are certain items that are not accepted, such as:

  • Flammable products
  • Oil
  • Paint cans
  • Tires
  • Animal carcasses
  • Manure
  • Tree stumps
  • Dirt
  • Stone
  • Rock
  • Brick
  • Lead
  • Acid or wet cell batteries
  • Railroad ties
  • Toxic materials
  • Bio-hazardous materials or waste
  • Propane
  • Oxygen and helium tanks
  • Items containing gas or oil
  • Explosives
  • Live ammunition or weapons
  • Large amounts of animal waste
  • Over-sized brush longer than four feet in length or six inches in diameter
  • Bags that weigh more than 50 pounds
  • Items that cannot be safely loaded by our crews for removal
  • Items that may damage our hauling equipment

Electronic Waste items (computers, televisions, etc.) are not accepted. Republic Services and BCA will host E-Waste collection events on a quarterly basis. The Loudoun County Landfill will dispose of electronics at a $6 fee, plus $0.03 per pound over 160 lbs.

Recycling Guidelines

Acceptable items for recycling include:

  • Mixed paper: Junk mail, newspaper, magazines, phone books, office paper, paperboard (i.e. cereal boxes), and flattened cardboard boxes
  • Food and beverage: Glass containers, plastic bottles/containers (must have the recycling triangle on the plastic, any number in the center will be accepted), tin and aluminum cans
Items not accepted by the recycling program:

  • Containers used for insecticides, herbicides, petroleum products; paint or automotive fluids are not accepted
  • Windows, drinking glasses, cups, plates, cookware, mirrors, light bulbs, broken glass
  • Styrofoam containers
  • Recyclable container contaminated with food—i.e. pizza boxes, plastic or aluminum carry-out food trays
  • Plastic film such as grocery and dry cleaning bags

Yard Debris Recycling Guidelines

  • Grass clippings and leaves need to be contained in a dedicated and identified container or paper bags.
  • Brush and limbs must be cut into 4-foot lengths and bundled (arm-full size) with rope or twine and should not exceed 50 lbs. Tree limbs larger than 6 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length will not be collected
  • Concrete, bricks, blocks, rocks, mulch, sod, and dirt will not be collected.
